Nan Joy Photography

The viewer may find elements of whimsy, mystery and melancholia in my work. My photography is the result of a need that I have to create. I weave aspects of my history, education and life experience into my work. This combination of forces knit together my passion for seeing things in a new way.

It delights me to photograph every day objects in abstract compositions. The reason that I love photography is the satisfaction that I get from capturing a moment. The captured picture seems concrete – a cabinet, a sidewalk – but it isn’t. Seen in a different light, these objects become abstract.

My art is a personal expression of myself. It is a combination of my creative temperament, unconscious motives and cultural influences. At times, certain themes or symbols emerge in my work that I don’t understand. The viewer, when looking at my art, filters their personal history into their interpretation of the piece. In the end, as with all art, the meaning of the image is subjective. My images can be seen to have different meanings, and I accept all interpretations as true.
